The Preterite — What Is It?

The pretérito indefinido (preterite) is used for completed actions in the past — things that happened once, at a specific time, and are now finished.

Think of it as the "snapshot" tense — it captures a single moment or completed event.

Use the preterite for: Actions that happened once, at a specific moment, with a clear beginning and end. "I ate breakfast" · "She called me yesterday" · "They arrived at 3pm"
Preterite — Regular Conjugations

Drop the infinitive ending (-ar, -er, -ir) and add these endings:

-AR verbs (hablar → habl-)
yo (hablé)
-aste (hablaste)
él/ella (habló)
nosotros-amos (hablamos)
ellos-aron (hablaron)
-ER / -IR verbs (comer → com-)
yo (comí)
-iste (comiste)
él/ella-ió (comió)
nosotros-imos (comimos)
ellos-ieron (comieron)
Notice: -ER and -IR verbs share the exact same preterite endings! Less to memorize.
"Yo comí" means...?
Preterite Time Expressions — Triggers

These time expressions almost always signal the preterite because they refer to a specific, completed moment:

SpanishEnglishExample
ayeryesterday Ayer comí pizza.
anteayerday before yesterday Anteayer fui al cine.
anochelast night Anoche dormí bien.
la semana pasadalast week La semana pasada viajé.
el mes pasadolast month El mes pasado compré un carro.
el año pasadolast year El año pasado viví en Madrid.
el otro díathe other day El otro día vi a tu hermano.
la Navidad pasadalast Christmas La Navidad pasada nevó.
en eneroin January En enero empecé el curso.
en mis cumpleañoson my birthday En mis cumpleaños bailé mucho.
Preterite Irregular — The Big Ones

These are the most common irregular preterite verbs. They have completely unique stems and share a special set of unstressed endings (-e, -iste, -o, -imos, -ieron):

InfinitiveEnglishYoÉl/EllaNosotrosEllos
ser / irto be / to go fuifuistefuefuimosfueron
decirto say dijedijistedijodijimosdijeron
hacerto do/make hicehicistehizohicimoshicieron

conducirto drive condujecondujistecondujocondujimoscondujeron
producirto produce produjeprodujisteprodujoprodujimosprodujeron
andarto walk anduveanduvisteanduvoanduvimosanduvieron
verto see vivisteviovimosvieron
Key pattern: SER and IR share the exact same preterite conjugation (fui, fuiste, fue...). Context tells you which verb is meant.
"Ayer hice la tarea" means...?
The Imperfect — Ongoing Past

The imperfecto describes ongoing, repeated, or habitual actions in the past — things that were happening, used to happen, or were the background of a story.

Use the imperfect for: Descriptions, routines, ongoing actions, age, time, weather in the past. "I used to play" · "It was raining" · "She was 10 years old"
-AR verbs (hablar → habl-)
yo -aba (hablaba)
-abas (hablabas)
él/ella -aba (hablaba)
nosotros -ábamos (hablábamos)
ellos -aban (hablaban)
-ER / -IR verbs (comer → com-)
yo -ía (comía)
-ías (comías)
él/ella -ía (comía)
nosotros -íamos (comíamos)
ellos -ían (comían)
Only 3 irregular verbs in the imperfect: ser (era, eras, era, éramos, eran), ir (iba, ibas, iba, íbamos, iban), ver (veía, veías, veía, veíamos, veían).
Imperfect Time Expressions — Triggers

These expressions signal repetition or habit and almost always trigger the imperfect:

SpanishEnglish
a vecessometimes
a menudooften
cada díaevery day
cada mesevery month
cada veranoevery summer
de vez en cuandoonce in a while
siemprealways
todos los díasevery day
todos los lunesevery Monday
muchas vecesmany times
raras vecesrarely
a cada ratoall the time
Preterite vs Imperfect — The Key Difference

This is the most important distinction. Both are past tenses, but they describe different types of past events:

PRETERITE (snapshot)

Completed actions

Happened once

Specific time

Has a clear end

Ayer comí pizza.

Ella llamó a las tres.

IMPERFECT (movie)

Descriptions & routines

Happened repeatedly

No specific end

Background / ongoing

De niño comía pizza todos los viernes.

Ella siempre llamaba temprano.

The story formula: In a story, the imperfect sets the scene (background, description, weather, feelings) and the preterite advances the plot (what happened, key events).

Era de noche y llovía. (imperfect — scene) De repente, alguien tocó la puerta. (preterite — event)
"Cuando era niño, jugaba en el parque" uses the imperfect because...?
Choose the correct form: "Ayer _____ (llover) mucho."
